Jack Risk

Not a high-powered superman or a reality-bending mystic, not an alien from an unimaginable world or a jut-jawed hero standing up for truth and justice, that's not Jack Risk. He's just a guy who drinks too much, talks too fast, and wears a cheap suit...and saves the world every chance he gets. Student of the occult, slave of coincidence, actor, layabout, drug dealer, and confidence man, James Dean Risk is the sort of guy who would probably spend half his life on the dole if he didn't happen to stumble across endless magical conspiracies, menacing plots, and secret societies bent on world domination.

Very little is known about Jack Risk's early years. Born to a working-class family in south London, he dropped out of college at age 20 when his parents and sisters were killed in a mysterious fire, the circumstances of which he refuses to discuss. He traveled the world after that, burning through the insurance money and unintentionally visiting a number of places of great magical power and historical significance. He first came to promience when he tracked down Beldam in order to warn her against, and ultimately assist her in defeating, the ancient Asian demon-dragon Jiaolong -- which he himself had accidentally awakened.

James Dean Risk, the "Modern Moira".

Since that time, Jack Risk has gone from place to place, attracting strangeness and danger wherever he goes. He has probed the mysteries of the world for over 20 years, unearthing the bizarre and the unusual wherever he goes (whether he wants to or not). Neither a metahuman nor a superhero, he has nonetheless been in the thick of almost every vital event of the last quarter-century that involved the supernatural. He seems to believe that he has been cursed by fortune, and has the attitude of someone who'd really rather not do what he does and would much rather spend the day playing the ponies as face down an undead menace or an ill-tempered sorcerer, but he seems to have little choice.

Jack Risk is extremely lucky. Things often go his way, and bad luck tends to befall those who stand in his way. He has a knack for being in just the right place, and he seems to be able to make intuitive leaps. Things generally favor him -– although at times, his luck seems to run out, and every so often, everything that can go wrong for him does.

Lord Abraham Exeter-Coyle -- who, much to Risk's irritation, seems to have taken the foul-mouthed amateur occultist on as a sort of apprentice, claims that the younger man has tremendous magical powers, and is in fact a locus of mystical energy, a sort of living ley line -- hence his presence at or involvement in every major event from the Three Titans War to the Infernal Rebellion. It was Lord Abraham who nicknamed him "the modern Moira", after the ancient Greek personification of fate and necessity. Then again, it should be remembered that Exeter-Coyle also claims to himself be the most powerful living sorcerer, despite never actually manifesting any ability to cast spells. Jack Risk may not have any powers at all, and may simply be extremely lucky and blessed with the gift (or curse) of being in the right place at the right time when something unusual happens. The truth may never be known, but his adventures aren't likely to come to an end anytime soon, unless his luck really runs out.
